Organization Description:

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

Job Description:

ID01 is a beamline that offers sub-micron sized x-ray beams, combining the advantages of local diffraction, coherent diffraction and specially adapted sample environments AFM.

You will participate in ongoing in-house research programmes, the running of the Beamline, providing support to external users and collaborators as local contact. Typical materials studied are semiconductor nanostructures and functional nano materials in the form of piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics or micromechanical systems (MEMS).
You will develop a personal research project making use of and developing the unique opportunities offered at ID01. Among these are small coherent x-ray beams that can be exploited with a diffractometer of highest precision and stability as well as an in situ nano-probe combining scanning probe microscopy, local sample manipulation and (coherent) diffraction. The exploitation of the coherence properties of the beam in the form of coherent diffraction imaging techniques will be of particular importance

Requirements:

You should hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, material science, biophysics, or closely related science. A strong background in diffraction techniques and instrumentation is desirable.

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18 month-period. Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.
