Post-Doctoral Fellow (m/f) for the X-Ray Microtomography beamline ID19 - PDID19-2
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
You will participate in research programmes, the operation of the instruments and activities involving support to external users, especially in the field of palaeontological research. You should, in addition, develop your own research programmes in palaeontology, which should exploit the unique capabilities associated with the source, length and versatility of this beamline, in particular using synchrotron-based microCT with different contrast modalities.
ID19 is a 150 m-long insertion device beamline devoted to parallel and coherent microtomography with phase contrast. The beamline offers a high level of versatility, i.e. X-ray imaging can be done covering orders of magnitude in terms of spatial resolution (1 µm to 100 µm), energy (7 keV to 250 keV), temporal resolution (down to 1 s per CT scan) and propagation distance (5 mm to 16 m). Experiments originate from a wide variety of scientific fields, e.g. palaeontology, biology/biomedical, engineering materials, or cultural heritage.
You must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in palaeontology, or a related discipline. Previous experience in hard X-ray synchrotron tomography techniques applied on fossils is requested, as well as aptitudes in 3D processing and 3D data analysis and rendering. Know-how in programming and image processing will be considered as important assets. A research programme in the field of palaeontology or of evolutionary biology would be strongly appreciated.
The working language of the ESRF is English. Further information on the post can be obtained from Paul tafforeau (tel.: +33 (0)4 38 88 19 74, email: firstname.lastname@example.org). For further information on employment terms and conditions, please refer to http://www.esrf.fr/Jobs/Conditions. The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons.
Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18 month-period.Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.
