At present we hold a position in our Wet Processing, Epi and Assembly (WEA) department for a (m/f) Senior Researcher Group IV Epitaxy.
Job description For decades, silicon has been the work horse semiconductor material for advanced micro-electronic circuits of which CMOS is the most important technology. In order to keep Moore’s Law alive, industry started in 2005 to introduce germanium with the 90nm CMOS node in SiGe alloy source and drain areas. With Si as channel material reaching its ultimate limits for further scaling, imec pioneered the use of pure germanium channels since about 10 years. Its higher carrier mobilities in combination with strain and bandgap engineering in new device architectures have led to exciting results.
Next to pure germanium, imec looks also into GeSn alloys for further strained CMOS engineering. Even more exciting is the use of GeSn in imec’s optical interconnect program. Its unique direct bandgap properties allow fabrication of highly efficient light emission in photodiodes and lasers as key components for monolithically integrated CMOS compatible optical interfaces.
Most instrumental to these developments is the use of epitaxial CVD growth techniques. Further developments of and with these techniques will allow fabricating layers and structures with properties that device engineers in the past could only dream of.
Creating options for the 1410nm logic node, screening these options and implementing them in a 300mm wafer fab environment is the task of the Group IV Epitaxy team. As a senior researcher in this team:
You plan and follow up the process development as part of the group IV epitaxy team.
You are responsible for the design and interpretation of complex growth experiments.
You provide fundamental understanding on the physical and chemical processes that govern the growth dynamics, interface and defects of Group IV materials on patterned device wafers.
You will be a key contributor to Group IV research activities of the team. You present research results on international conferences, and publish results in scientific journals.
You contribute to continuous improvement of existing CVD growth processes in close collaboration with the fab engineering teams. You will share and discuss your R&D results at team and program meetings, and you timely execute process development projects.
You work in a dynamic multidisciplinary and multicultural environment together with imec researchers, industry assignees, device and process experts.
You obtained a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or Material Sciences and display a strong scientific mindset.
A minimum of 5 post-doctoral years of experience in Group IV epitaxy by means of CVD is a must, preferably in an industrial semiconductor environment. Alternatively, a PhD in the area of SiGe or Ge epitaxial growth could work as well.
Given the international character of imec, fluency in English is a must.
