Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Flexoelectricity
BARCELONA ADDS VALUE (HEURISTICA DE CATALUNYA, S.L.)
The Institut Català de Nanotecnologia (http://www.icn.cat) is a non-profit research institute, founded in July 2003 by the Catalan Government and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), who are its patrons. ICN’s focus is excellence in research on nanoscience and nanotechnology. ICN has an excellent human team providing administrative and technical support to the scientists, and has just moved to a new building equipped with state of the art experimental facilities.
The candidate will work on a project in the area of Flexoelectricity. The aims of the project are to set up a state of the art facility for the study of flexoelectricity at the nanoscale, to understand the fundamental science of this phenomenon, and to exploit it for specific applications in energy harvesting and information technology. The postdoctoral scientist will play a central role in achieving these goals. The applicant will work on the synthesis and electronic and electromechanical characterization of nanostructures with built-in strain gradients. The fabrication will involve some form of nanostructuration, either by bottom-up (growth) techniques or top-down (lithography) approaches. The familiarity with and liking for different nanofabrication methods and thin film deposition (sputtering or PLD techniques) is therefore important, as is the willingness and skill to get involved in the setting up of the experimental facilities.
The applicant should have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in Physics, Materials Science or Electronic Engineering. The applicant must be an independent thinker and excellent communicator in English, both in writing and in oral presentations. The ability to provide his/her own scientific steam is deemed essential at this career stage. Good interpersonal skills and educational attitude are also required to supervise PhD students working on the same project.
