PhD studentship on water freezing at the nanoscale
BARCELONA ADDS VALUE (HEURISTICA DE CATALUNYA, S.L.)
The Institut Català de Nanociencia i Nanotecnologia (http://www.icn.cat) is a non-profit research institute, jointly funded by Catalan Government, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC). ICN’s focus is excellence in research on nanoscience and nanotechnology. ICN2 has just moved to a new building equipped with state of the art facilities.
The candidate will work in the area of molecular structure of water at interfaces and wetting at the nanometer scale. The aim of the project is to design and create coatings using nanotechnology that can control water freezing on surfaces. The PhD students will learn about the physics and chemistry of molecular adsorption processes, surface science, water freezing, self-assembled monolayers and atomic force microscopy. His/her tasks will include experiment design, monomolecular coatings fabrication and characterization, data analysis, and dissemination of results in international scientific journals and conferences.
Applicants should have completed a degree in Physics or Chemistry with an academic grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and we will value positively a Master’s degree in any complementary discipline such as Materials Science, Biophysics, or Nanotechnology. The successful candidate must have an enquiring mind, enjoy problem-solving and be able to think independently while at the same time working in a group --a confident and outgoing personality will help. A good command of English, both in writing and in oral presentations, is essential.
