Employment Start Date: As soon as possible

Organization Description:

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 20 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

You will participate in ongoing in-house research programmes, the running of the beamline, providing support to external users as local contact, and develop your own research programme.

The Surface Diffraction beamline is devoted to in-situ studies of the structure and morphology of surfaces during processes, going from growth under UHV conditions, to heterogeneous catalysis under realistic working conditions to electrochemistry. The experimental hutches host two diffractometers where surface x-ray diffraction, grazing incidence diffraction and grazing incidence small angle scattering experiments can be carried. The incident beam energy can also be tuned to perform resonant experiments. You will join the group to further develop the experimental end-stations and the experimental techniques. In particular you will have to directly follow up the heterogeneous catalysis project (for further information about the instrument/instrumentation please consult:

You should hold a PhD in chemistry, physics, material science or closely related science. A strong background in catalysis as well as in diffraction techniques is desirable.

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18 month-period. Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.
