Post-doctoral fellow (m/f) for the X-Ray Microspectroscopy beamline ID21 - Ref PDID21-1
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
As a post-doctoral fellow, you will be deeply involved in all the beamline activities: you will participate in the development of the beamline instruments, you will provide support to external users acting as a local contact, and you will develop your own in-house research programme.
ID21 is a micro-analytical platform devoted to high resolution X-ray and infrared micro-analysis and micro-spectroscopy. The beamline currently comprises two end-stations: (i) an X-ray microscope optimized for 2D micro-X-ray fluorescence and micro-XANES in the 2-9keV range; (ii) a FTIR microscope. A third end-station is currently under construction dedicated to micro X-ray diffraction. User support on these instruments will be a key activity providing opportunities for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field.Current users and in-house research applications are mainly in the fields of Biology, Medicine, Geochemistry, Archeometry, or Environmental Sciences. You will be encouraged to develop your own research programme, in one of these fields or any others, providing that it exploits ID21’s unique possibilities(a description of a project will be appreciated).
You must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in physics, biology, chemistry or a related discipline. Previous experience in a synchrotron radiation analytical field such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, FTIR vibrational spectroscopy is essential. Good communication skills are also essential to integrate into a multidisciplinary and international research team.
Post-doctoral fellows are employed for an 18-month period with a possibility of extension to another 6 to 18 months. Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.
The working language of the ESRF is English. For further information on employment terms and conditions, please refer to http://www.esrf.fr/Jobs/Conditions. The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons.
