PhD Thesis Student (m/f) Subject: Momentum dependence of crystal field excitations in Ce and Eu intermetallics - ref CFR386
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 20 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Upgrade Programme of the ESRF a new soft X-ray beamline for magnetic and electronic spectroscopy is currently being installed. One of the experimental end-stations of this beamline will be a spectrometer for resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering with unprecedented energy resolution. The successful candidate will participate in the commissioning of this instrument and then take part in a research programme dedicated to inelastic x-ray scattering by 4f electron systems. This programme will rely on the superior energy resolution of the new instrument that makes it possible to observe and identify electronic and magnetic excitations with very low excitation energies, and their dispersion, for the first time. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will also be involved in carrying out simulations of the performed experiments and developing new data analysis methods.
We are looking for a motivated candidate with a strong university background in physics or a closely related science and with a strong interest in X-ray spectroscopic methods and instrumentation. The candidate should have a good level in English and work effectively within a heterogeneous and multi-cultural environment. Solid experience in scientific data analysis and programming (Origin, Python, Matlab, C etc.) would be an asset.
The working language of the ESRF is English. Contract of two years renewable (subject to satisfactory progress) for one year. Monthly gross remuneration: 2320 €.
