Post-Doctoral fellow (m/f) for the Beam Dynamic and Software Application group - Ref PDAS01
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 20 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
As a member of the Beam Dynamics Group, you will perform beam studies coupled with advanced accelerator computations, aimed at achieving the performance required for the new lattice of the Phase II of the ESRF Upgrade. You will participate in the Technical Design Study presently in progress and in the following phases of the project.
The Beam Dynamics Group is responsible for the definition of the main parameters of a new lattice able to deliver a horizontal emittance of the electron beam smaller than 150 pm.
More specifically, your activities within the group will include, in the framework of the Phase II upgrade:
·Optimization of the linear optics
·Optimization of the Dynamic Aperture
·Engineering integration of the lattice
·Collective effects studies and minimization of their impact on the overall performances
·Injection system optimization
·Development of tuning tools
Additionally, in the framework of the current ESRF Accelerator Complex, activities will include:
·Development of modelling tools
·Development of Accelerator control software
·Training of Operators on Accelerator physics
·General optimization of the Accelerator Complex performances
·Participation in the Accelerator studies and shutdown activities
In conjunction with all technically competent staff, you will work up to 15% of your time on shift to operate the machine for service to users.
You should hold a first degree and PhD in physics or a related discipline by the starting date of the contract. Experience with accelerator physics and background in lattice design preferably in a third generation synchrotron source is highly desirable. Team work capability is essential. A good knowledge of English is required.

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18 month-period.Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.
