Scientist (m/f) for High Brilliance X-Ray Spectroscopy on Beamline ID26 - Ref 2323
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 20 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
The ESRF beamline ID26 is dedicated to X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. We study the electronic structure and local coordination in systems that are relevant in the applied sciences (materials science, coordination (bio)chemistry, (bio)catalysis, mineralogy and earth sciences). The beamline hosts unique instrumentation for advanced X-ray spectroscopies and thus provides state-of-the-art research possibilities.
We collaborate with theory groups that develop codes for electronic structure calculations for X-ray spectroscopies. ID26 is currently pursuing an ambitious programme to develop new instrumentation. This includes increasing the luminosity of an existing instrument, development of a new spectrometer for the energy range 2-5 keV and combining X-ray spectroscopy with imaging. An important application of the new instruments will be in environmental sciences.
You will lead the development of a new instrument for X-ray emission spectroscopy. This includes ray tracing calculations, a technical design report, ordering of components and installation of the instrument. You will receive support for engineering, electronics, technical and software tasks. You will pursue your own research projects which exploit the instrumentation for high brilliance X-ray spectroscopy.
You must hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or a related field. Very good skills in instrumentation (e.g. X-ray instrumentation, in-situ cells, spectroscopy instrumentation …) and previous research related to electronic structure analysis are essential.
