Postdoctoral Researcher in Films and Devices of Highly Ordered Organic Semiconductors

Today, organic semiconductor devices are severely limited by the strong disorder in the amorphous or polycrystalline organic films. This disorder is not an intrinsic molecular property, it is due to the nature of the films. Indeed, single-crystal organic semiconductors can be fabricated that display exciting characteristics and high performance. Single organic crystals are, however, only grown as individual objects with no easy integration into practical devices. Allying the performance of highly ordered organic semiconductors with integrated practical applications requires a mastering of the nucleation and growth on arbitrary surfaces. To this end, we explore novel solution-based processing techniques and materials for the formation of highly ordered organic thin films on weakly-interacting substrates. Ultimately, our goal is to integrate high-performance organic single-crystal devices on large area flexible foils, using industrially-relevant process flows. Examples of potential applications are flexible circuits and a host of large-area optoelectronics applications (smart packaging, biomedical applications flexible displays, large area sensor arrays,...).
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with experience in the processing of highly ordered organic semiconductors. The researcher will work on the optimization of the growth from solution of highly ordered organic thin films and in a second phase integrate these layers into high-performance optoelectronic devices, involving hetero-epitaxy of organic semiconductors. The position requires hands-on lab experience with device fabrication, solution-based formation of crystalline films, and possibly also vacuum evaporation. Understanding of the physics governing organic crystal growth as well as a strong background in optoelectronics of organic semiconductors are desirable. This work will take place in a group of approximately 20 researchers and process engineers at imec.
You have a PhD degree in Physics, Materials Science or Engineering and practical experience with the processing of highly ordered organic semiconductors.
You have a strong theoretical background in crystal growth and optoelectronics.
You can quickly change the focus of your research and pursue opportunities.
You are a self-motivated and a hands-on person.
You have excellent reporting skills and are able to present scientific results (publications, conferences, seminars).
You can easily integrate in an international team.
Good English communication skills are required.
This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through the KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
