Nurturing knowledge in biomolecular electronics

(Nanowerk News) An EU-backed exchange programme is building future capacity in the field of biomolecular electronics through collaboration and training.
Biomolecular electronics has an exciting future in a wide range of applications, including molecular transistors, integrated biosensors and electrocatalysis in biofuel cells. Given the vast potential of this emerging field, collaboration is key to future European success.
With funding from the People sub-programme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), the 'Biomolecular electronics and electrocatalysis' (BIOMOLECTRONIC) project is working to strengthen existing cooperation in the field between three institutions — two in Europe and one in Argentina.
The programme's three partner groups are carrying out activities in chemistry, spectroscopy, electrochemistry, instrumentation and molecular simulation. More specifically, BIOMOLECTRONIC is focusing on four areas: tailoring redox complexes for catalysis, covalent surface modification, spectroscopy and spectroelectrochemistry, and layer-by-layer (LbL) films for electrocatalysis.
BIOMOLECTRONIC has already deepened and enhanced the level of cooperation between its partner groups, and is likely to broaden collaboration even further by the end of the exchange programme in early 2015. The project has also helped early-stage researchers to benefit from the combined knowledge and expertise of the participating research centres. This will help to build a new cadre to spearhead future research and development.
