The Level One Certificate in Nanobiotechnology will prepare students to work on the interface between nanotechnology and biotechnology that involves synthesis and fabrication of materials and devices, surface and molecular engineering. The students will complete16 credits in materials and nanotechnology courses and will complete 7 credits specializing in Biotechnology as it applies to nanotechnology.
The Advanced Technical Certificate is designed for the student who wishes to transition into the Nanotechnology field from a traditional science education background. To be admitted to the Advanced Technical Certificate, the student must hold an Associate or Baccalaureate degree with a concentration in a Physical or Natural Science discipline of either Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Engineering. A minimum of 8 credits in Physics coursework including laboratory training is required. The Certificate will prepare students to transition into careers in emerging nanotechnology industries as nanotechnicians in research and development corporations, fabrication, biology/agriculture, medicine, electronics, and material science.
Rice University has established a unique interdisciplinary program in Nanophotonics aimed at providing science and engineering students with the educational and research training to develop new tools for generating, controlling and manipulating light at nanoscale dimensions.
This program prepares students for a career in nanoscience by combining a strong component in quantum theory, which governs the behavior of systems at the nanoscale, with the study of practical nano- and mesoscale devices. This provides the student with the knowledge required to successfully navigate the emerging field of nanoscale science and nanotechnology. Unlike traditional master's degrees, this degree combines an interdisciplinary curriculum with business training and hands-on experience via a three to six month internship giving graduates a new 'tool-set' for success in a business environment.

Students who have a strong background in any of the physical sciences or engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply to the Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering. MS&E students that select the Nanomaterials Thrust will take a sequence of courses from basic to advanced designed to train them in the fundamentals of materials science as well as critical skills in processing, characterization and applications of nanomaterials.
