The mission of core facilities for nanoscience and nanotechnology at the Academia Sinica (NanoCore) is to support and promote the advanced research on nanoscience and nanotechnology, such as the studies on nanostructures,
nanomaterials, probes and manipulation techniques, nanodevices, and nanobiotechnology.
Three laboratories make up the center: the Nanomaterial Laboratory, Nanobiomedical Laboratory and Nanoelectronic Laboratory. They relate to research/development of new materials, biomedicine and light and display and energy respectively.
The scope of ITRI Nanotechnology covers aspects in electronics, data storage, packaging, energy, display, photonics, biotechnology, platform technology, application in traditional industries, and facilities built-up.
The development of nanotechnology & bio-medical technology at ITRC focuses on the surface science. To better understand the interactions between the material (majorly silicon based) surface condition and the applied chemical agents under different environmental conditions, ITRC has developed a variety of methods to modify the material surface, to examine the surface characteristic, and to probe the interaction phenomena.
In the area of Material, Chemical and Nanotechnology , ITRI collaborates with competitive industries in Taiwan to develop key materials and components in the field of electronics, optoelectronics and panel display. In the meantime, ITRI develops high-tech fibers and specialty chemicals, in cope with the demand for the transformation of traditional textile and chemical industries to high value-added industries.
In order to upgrade the quality and image of nanoproducts, protect consumer welfare, and promote a sound development of the domestic nano industry, the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs initiated the promotion of a 'nanoproduct certification system' (nanoMARK).
The three objectives for the center are 1) to promote and coordinate large-scale interdisciplinary research programs in nano-science and technology. 2) to plan and to co-ordinate cross-disciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate training in nano-science and technology. 3) to serve as a bridge between the university's nano-research and the industrial application in nanotechnology.
The main objective of this center is to educate hi-tech professionals demanded both in academic and industrial fields, which will consequently promote academic research in electronics and forward the development of IC industry.
With one of the best facilities and multidisciplinary expertise in nanoscience, nanotechnology and microsystems, the Center has about 120 dedicated doctoral research members with a broad spectrum of backgrounds from colleges of engineering, electrical and computer engineering, sciences, and medicine.
NDL has been playing a significant role in support of universities in Taiwan for research and development in advance semiconductor process technologies, and educating and training high-tech people for the microelectronics industries.
