SSCSSN is established to provide research facilities for training Under Graduate, Graduate and Doctoral students in the areas of fundamental and applied aspects of Surface Science and Nanotechnology. The focus is on identifying and solving problems of various industries and developing new processes and technology, which can be implemented in industries.

The Centre of Excellence in Nanoelectronics (CEN) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) focuses on research and education in the areas of nano-scale electronics, devices, technologies, materials, micro and nanoelectromechanical systems, bio-electronic interfaces, and integrated small-scale systems. The Center runs a multidisciplinary research program involving more than 40 faculty members from various departments of engineering and basic science.

This is a joint project between the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to create Centres of Excellence in Nanoelectronics.
The mission of this Centre is to promote forefront basic and applied research in the fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, with potential applications towards fulfilling national strategic needs. The main research focus of the Centre includes Nano-fabrication & Nano-device, Nano-materials & Nano-structures, Nano-biotechnology & Nano-medicine, Nano-structure characterization & measurements.
Keeping in view of the importance of Nanotechnology and the infrastructure available in Jamia, the Department of Physics started a two-year M. Tech Nanotechnology course in 2007 with an initial intake of 15 students, which has been enhanced to 20 students with effect from the academic year 2012-13.
Research activities include synthesis and characterization of a variety of nanoobjects-tubes, wires and particles of different materials, their chemical modification and organization as well as thin films and powders of transition metal oxides showing interesting physical properties.

The Department of Physics offers a two year full time M.Sc. Programme with specialisation in nanoscience and technology, microsystems (MEMS) and embedded technology. The subjects such as Advanced Condensed Matter Physics, Physics of Thin Films and Nano-Materials & Devices are also included in the curriculum.
NSTC works to create a platform conducive for the growth, promotion and partnering in the field of Nano Science and Technology taking together industries, academics and government through consultative, advisory and educative processes which will provide growth platform for organizations, academics and governments for harnessing the Nano potential at Global level.
