National Nanotechnology Coordination Office announces new deputy director
|

(Nanowerk News) The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sally Tinkle as the Deputy Director of the NNCO and Coordinator for Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS). As Deputy Director, Dr. Tinkle will assist the Director and all member agencies of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee to ensure effective communication and coordination of the NNI, and as Coordinator for EHS, she will be working with agencies to ensure effective communication and coordination of agency EHS R&D efforts and integration of these efforts with the NNI Strategy for Nanotechnology-Related EHS Research.

Dr. Tinkle joins the NNCO after serving as the co-chair for the NSET Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council and as the task group leader for human health and nanomaterials for the NSET Subcommittee's Nanotechnology Environment and Health Implications (NEHI) working group.

"In addition to her expertise in the field of nanotechnology, Dr. Tinkle has demonstrated superb leadership skills and a dedication to helping foster, grow, and realize the vision and goals of the National Nanotechnology Initiative," said Dr. Clayton Teague, Director of the NNCO. "We are pleased that Dr. Tinkle has joined the NNCO in this role, and we are certain she will continue to be an energetic and positive force within the National Nanotechnology Initiative."

Before her appointment to the NNCO, Dr. Sally Tinkle served as the Senior Science Advisor in the Office of the Director, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her nanotechnology experience includes development of the NIEHS nanotoxicology extramural research portfolio and the NIEHS NanoHealth and Safety Enterprise, a framework for public-private partnerships. She has been an active member of the trans-NIH Nanotechnology Task Force and is senior author of the health implications of engineered nanomaterials section of the NIH Nanotechnology Report to the Director. At NIEHS, Dr. Tinkle also served as the contract officer for the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences Research and Medicine and initiated the development of an integrated, trans-NIEHS global environmental health program.

In addition to her co-chairing the NSET subcommittee and serving as a NEHI working group Task Group Leader, she was a senior author on the human health sections of the three NEHI environment health and safety (EHS) documents that form the Federal approach to EHS research. She is frequently an invited speaker at nanotechnology meetings, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Tinkle received her PhD from the Department of Physiology at the University of Colorado School Of Medicine in Denver, CO and was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Science. Prior to joining NIH, she was the leader of a pulmonary and dermal toxicology laboratory at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in Morgantown, WV.
