Oil and Moisture Measurement Time Dramatically Reduced for Cellulose Acetate Fibres
(Nanowerk News) Oxford Instruments Magnetic Resonance, the supplier of intelligent NMR, announces that it has developed a method for using its MQC benchtop NMR instrument to simultaneously measure both oil and moisture in cellulose acetate fibres. Getting two measurements in one sample run will greatly increase throughput.
Cellulose acetate fibres are widely used in synthetic fabrics, membranes, and various types of filters. Their use in fibre manufacturing and processing requires the proper amounts of both spin finish oils and moisture. Textile manufacturers' quality control laboratories working with cellulose acetate fibres have previously performed two separate measurements to obtain oil and moisture content.
The Oxford Instruments MQC-23 NMR Analyser can now measure both the spin finish oil and moisture content in the cellulose acetate fibres. One measurement covering both spin finish oil and moisture takes approximately 2 minutes, compared to standard techniques that take about the same amount of time for the moisture sample alone.
"Combining the NMR moisture measurement with the spin finish oil measurement on the Oxford Instruments MQC-23 results in significant time savings over the course of many samples," said Barry Jones, Director of Sales.
The analytical technique is based on direct measurements of NMR response from the spin finish oil and moisture in the fibre samples and quantification of the oil and water content by appropriate calibrations. The calibrations are generated using NMR data acquired for samples with known oil and moisture concentrations. Sample preparation does not require any special equipment or skills and the software application and MQC analyser can be easily operated by a user who is not an NMR expert.
