An introduction to quantum computing

(Nanowerk News) Computers have changed the way we process information, communicate and do business. There is a continual drive towards faster and smaller processors allowing the solution of many scientific problems, greater breadth of communication and fuelling an industry that is worth hundreds of billions of euros. Quantum computing offers a completely new paradigm in computing, and although it will not be available soon, it is expected that the first quantum computers will be a reality sometime this century.
This report by Nanoforum describes the basics of quantum computing, covering the concepts of QuBits, Quantum Entanglement and Decoherence, different models for quantum computers (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, ion trap, superconducting circuits), Quantum Cryptography, Quantum Teleportation, and of course, Schrödinger’s Cat.
