ICE Science journal series launches with 28 debut ahead of print articles now available free
(Nanowerk News) ICE Publishing, the publishing division of the Institution of Civil Engineers, today announces the immediate availability of 28 ahead of print articles – including 2012 Themed Issue articles of Bioinspired Materials – from its new flagship journal series: ICE Science.
Offering free online access to all published content throughout 2011 and 2012, the ICE Science collection has a multidisciplinary approach that aims to foster dynamic links between research communities that traditionally work in isolation, stimulating new ideas and creating opportunities for innovative collaborations. Inspiring fresh thinking in how breakthrough research can be practically applied to make materials, medicines and energy ever more efficient and effective, ICE Science is poised to revolutionise scientific research communications as a multidisciplinary platform for the scientific community.
The interdisciplinary nature of the three journals in the ICE Science series has already attracted the submission of a very high standard of compelling research, and these first 28 papers represent the very best of these early submissions.
"It's exciting to be publishing articles from so many spectrums of science" said Victoria Rae, Commissioning Editor at ICE Publishing. "We've received manuscripts from all over the world, with authors working in a variety of disciplines including Chemistry, Physics, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Chemical and Biological Engineering. All three ICE Science titles complement one another by publishing at the intersections of scientific research and sharing common themes, such as solar energy, biomedical materials and nanocomposites."
The high calibre of the early submissions to 'Nanomaterials and Energy', 'Emerging Materials Research' and 'Bioinspired, Biomimetic and Nanobiomaterials', clearly demonstrates enthusiasm for the multidisciplinary model. The first authors talk of their positive experience publishing with ICE Science, describing the peer review and editorial processes as "attentive and fair".
Among the first of the 'Bioinspired, Biomimetic and Nanobiomaterials' articles is a paper by Jie Han and co-authors from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China and Korea Basic Science Institute, Korea, on the unique reflection properties of nano-CdS/butterfly wings nanocomposites, focusing on exploring unusual optical properties by substituting the natural photonic crystals (PhC) structures in butterfly wings for artificial PhCs.
In an article by Dale R. Harshman, Physikon Research Corporation, USA, University of Notre Dame, USA and Anthony T. Fiory, New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA, for 'Emerging Materials Research', the high-transition temperature (high-TC) superconductivity in ultrathin crystals is considered, alongside the implications for microscopic theory.
Debut articles for Nanomaterials and Energy include a review on the methods developed and studied to control nanomorphology in plastic solar cells by John A. Carr and colleagues from the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University, USA.
Nanomaterials and Energy will be the first journal to be launched in the ICE Science collection, in January 2012. Led by editor-in-chief, Professor Nitin Chopra, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, USA, the journal will bring together research from scientists and engineers working at the juncture of nanomaterials and energy, helping identify new and ever more efficient energy sources with a cost-benefit focus.
Emerging Materials Research launches in February 2012 and brings new vision and insight to the field of materials science. Materials Research is constantly evolving and correlations between process, structure, properties and performance - which are application specific - require expert understanding at the macro-, micro- and nano-scale. Through this new journal, editor-in-chief, Professor N. M Ravindra, New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA, invites researchers across science and engineering to identify revolutionary and diverse applications for new and evolving materials.
Bioinspired, Biomimetic and Nanobiomaterials brings together ideas from the most promising area of research within the field of biological materials science and engineering. The technological significance of this area is immense for applications as diverse as tissue engineering and drug delivery biosystems to biomimicked sensors and optical devices. This third journal, in the ICE Science collection, also launches in February 2012 and its Editor-in-chief is Professor Kajal Mallick, School of Engineering, University of Warwick, UK.
