Hundreds of students from across the state visit UAlbany NanoCollege for NanoCareer Day

(Nanowerk News) Hundreds of students from across New York State got a firsthand glimpse of the exciting world of nanotechnology on Wednesday, March 7 when they visited the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering for NanoCareer Day.

More than 300 elementary, middle- and high-school students traveled to the UAlbany NanoCollege, the world's most advanced university-driven research enterprise, for a day filled with fun, interactive programs led by CNSE faculty and students.

Visiting students participated in hands-on activities, such as extracting DNA from a banana; witnessed the complex's cleanrooms at work; and even got the opportunity to dress up in cleanroom "bunny suits," all while discovering the educational and career opportunities that CNSE is enabling in the nanotechnology arena.

The event is part of CNSE's efforts to prepare students for a growing number of nanotechnology-related careers in the Capital Region and across New York State. It also aims at addressing the national need to stimulate an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among America's younger generations.

Participating schools included Knickerbacker Middle School, Lansingburgh School District (Rensselaer); Bethlehem Central Middle School,Bethlehem Central School District (Albany); Hoosic Valley High School, Hoosic Valley Central Schools (Rensselaer); Lake Pleasant High School, Lake Pleasant Central Schools (Hamilton); Thomas R. Proctor High School, Utica City School District (Oneida); Syosset High School, Syosset Central School District (Suffolk); Holland Patent High School, Holland Patent Central Schools (Oneida); Ballston Spa School District Academic Enrichment Students – Grade 5 (Saratoga); Kennedy Catholic High School (Westchester); and Loudonville Christian School (Albany).
