Sir J. Fraser Stoddart to bring nanotechnology to the public
(Nanowerk News) Sir J. Fraser Stoddart, a world-renowned chemist who joined the Northwestern University faculty in January as Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, will be the featured speaker at the University’s third nanotechnology town hall meeting May 13.
Sir Fraser, a pioneer in the fields of nanoscience and organic chemistry, will deliver a talk in plain English, followed by questions from the audience. He will discuss “Mingling Art with Science.” The forum, free and open to the public, offers an opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of nanotechnology and to explore the larger questions about the smallest technology.
The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the Pancoe Abbott Auditorium, Arthur and Gladys Pancoe-Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Life Sciences Pavilion, 2200 Campus Drive. The discussion portion of the meeting will be moderated by Stuart Ray Sarbacker, senior lecturer in religion at Northwestern.
By introducing an additional type of bond (the mechanical bond) into chemical synthesis, Stoddart became one of the few chemists to have opened up a new field of chemistry during the past 25 years. A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Stoddart was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as a Knight Bachelor in her 2007 New Year’s Honors List for his services to chemistry and molecular nanotechnology.
Although free, the public outreach event requires advanced registration. To register, go to . For more information, call (847) 467-4862.
The town hall meetings are sponsored by the Northwestern University Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, the International Institute for Nanotechnology, the Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence and the Illinois Science Council.
