Rohm and Haas Technical Community Organization Presents Annual New Faculty Award to UMass' Alfred J. Crosby

(Nanowerk News) Managers and researchers from Rohm and Haas Company (NYSE:ROH) presented the 4th annual Rohm and Haas New Faculty Award to Alfred J. Crosby, Ph.D. during his award lecture, “Wrinkling, Crumpling, and Snapping Polymer Surfaces,” at the Rohm and Haas Spring House Technical Center last week.
Crosby is an assistant professor in the Polymer Science & Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was selected as this year’s award recipient for his research in the areas of adhesion and friction of patterned interfaces, deformation and failure of polymer/nanoparticle composites, and mechanics of biomaterial structures. He also received a monetary award as part of the annual honor.
Established and presented by the company’s Technical Community Organization (TCO), the Rohm and Haas New Faculty Award recognizes a non-tenured faculty member at an accredited university for his/her outstanding research achievement or potential in chemistry, polymers or materials science. Candidate nominations and selection of the award recipient are conducted by Rohm and Haas technologists.
Crosby earned his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at Northwestern University. He holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and applied mechanics at the University of Virginia. He is the winner of numerous awards, including a National Research Council Research Fellowship for his postdoctoral research with the Polymers Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. At UMass, he has received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Army Research Office Young Investigator Award, the Adhesion Society’s Young Scientist Award, and has been invited to participate in the National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.
The Rohm and Haas TCO was established in 1986 with the mission of encouraging scientific excellence, providing opportunities for professional development, promoting the exchange of new technology and fostering the spirit of cooperation within the Rohm and Haas technology community. Among the organization’s internal activities are an ongoing series of seminars led by researchers from prominent universities, and a biannual Tech Fair, which presents exhibits of the company’s top research programs to members of the Rohm and Haas technology community in a trade-show format.
