Research Explorer: Discover the German research landscape online |

(Nanowerk News) With the Research Explorer, an internet application developed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD, German Academic Exchange Service), a unique directory of German research institutions has now gone online: The Research Explorer is a comprehensive source of information on all types of research institutions in Germany, presented in a systematic and compact form, and available to users worldwide free of charge.

The DAAD and the DFG portals to the German research institutions are available on www.daad.de/research-explorer and www.dfg.de/research-explorer . The Research Explorer is intended both for German as well as international users and is therefore also available in English.

The Research Explorer provides users with information on over 17,000 research institutions, which can be searched by subject, location and structural criteria. The contact details and website addresses of all of the institutes listed are checked and updated on a regular basis. A search assistant helps users find what they are looking for by subject. Using a detailed subject classification system, it is possible to locate universities and non-university research institutions offering a specific scientific discipline in just three steps. In addition to this, the Research Explorer also makes it possible to search for all DFG-funded projects currently underway at a particular institution via a direct link to another information system: the DFG internet database service “GEPRIS”. Using the geographical search, the other alternative provided in the Research Explorer, users can get an impression of the wide variety of opportunities in the German research landscape via a map of Germany.

The DAAD and the DFG see the Research Explorer as an important source of information as part of the “International Marketing for the Education and Research Location Germany” initiative: With consistent and comprehensive information that is easily searchable and available in both German and English, it assists researchers in Germany and abroad in reaching decisions on cooperative projects with German partners, on investing in research, or on research visits to Germany. “The Research Explorer augments the extensive range of activities and initiatives already offered by the DAAD and the 'Research in Germany' campaign,” adds Christian Müller, head of the DAAD’s Communications and Marketing Division. “And we also plan to integrate the Research Explorer in the www.research-in-germany.de information portal in the near future.”

“The Research Explorer aims to provide quick access to the German research landscape for everyone interested in research in Germany, thus serving as a central source for arranging research contacts and collaborations across subject boundaries and geographical borders,” emphasised Markus Jagsch, who has overall responsibility for the project at the DFG. “The Research Explorer is a key addition, supplementing the existing research and funding related information services provided by the DFG, such as the Funding Ranking and the project information system GEPRIS,” said Dr. Jürgen Güdler, Head of Information Management at the DFG, explaining the goal of the new online application.
