'Protection 2033' symposium addresses the future of worker protection

(Nanowerk News) The International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), in cooperation with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), will sponsor a symposium Nov. 11, 2008, to examine the hazards workers will face and how they will be protected 25 years from now – in ISEA’s centennial year.
Speaking at “Protection 2033,” which will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City Hotel in Arlington, Va., will be leading futurist John Mahaffie, author of Future Work; John Howard, M.D., the sixth NIOSH director (2002-2008), and Richard W. Siegel, the Robert W. Hunt professor of materials science and engineering and director of the nanotechnology center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y.
Mahaffie will discuss the changing nature of work and hazards associated with these impending changes. Dr. Howard will examine how future government efforts to protect workers must change to keep pace with technological and cultural changes. Siegel will focus on how nanotechnology research will impact and improve the design and manufacture of PPE, as well as hazards these new materials may present.
This year, ISEA is celebrating its 75th anniversary, having been founded in New York City on July 31, 1933, as the Industrial Safety Equipment Association. The November symposium will be held in conjunction with ISEA’s Fall Meeting.
