SAFENANO Appoints Director of Operations

(Nanowerk News) SAFENANO, the UK’s premier resource on nanotechnology hazard and risk, has announced the appointment of Dr Steve Hankin as its new Director of Operations.
Dr Hankin, who has been a Senior Consultant at the Institute of Occupational Medicine since 2007, will work alongside Dr Rob Aitken, Director of the initiative, and its Director of Toxicology Professor Vicki Stone to drive forward SAFENANO in its key position as the only UK Micro- and Nano-technology open access centre with a sole focus on health & safety aspects of nanomaterials.
“I’m looking forward to joining the SAFENANO team and building on the internationally-acknowledged work done so far” said Dr Hankin.
As Director of Operations, Dr Hankin will lead the implementation of the SAFENANO open access centre, including the further development and roll-out of SAFENANO Scientific Services in occupational hygiene, toxicology, risk assessment and training.
“The importance of environment, health and safety issues is increasingly evident across the range of nanotechnology sectors and SAFENANO is uniquely placed to provide support and work with stakeholders to address the issues”. he continued.
SAFENANO Scientific Services provides companies operating in the nanotechnology industry with a multidisciplinary range of solutions to ensure they can offer employees a safe and healthy working environment and end products that are safe for customers.

His background in chemical risk assessment coupled with his recent experience nanoparticle risk projects such as REFNANO and EMERGNANO means the he is ideally suited to the post. The SAFENANO initiative is one of the Technology Strategy Board’s Micro and Nanotechnology Network’s UK Nanotechnology Centres of Excellence. Phase 1 of this initiative was officially launched in August 2007.
The launch of SAFENANO Scientific Services, which is part-funded by Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian and the Technology Strategy Board, represents the latest stage in IOM and SAFENANO’s nanotechnology programme. Through research, consultancy and service work for industry and government, it aims to understand, quantify and control risks posed by nanomaterials to the workforce, consumers, the general population and the environment
SAFENANO Scientific Services offers laboratory services and testing, workplace occupational hygiene, toxicology reports and reviews, as well as related training for staff and management to aid companies in the ensuring they meet regulatory duties, achieve effective product stewardship and manage potential liabilities towards users, customers and the environment.
