Nanotechnology gold probes may offer valuable insight into cancer

Gold nanoprobes could allow scientists to study cancer cells in minute detail - using a highly-sensitive imaging technique known as FRET microscopy - with the aim of identifying tumour-causing properties. The nanoprobes could also be used to measure how effective medicines are, at a sub-cellular level of detail, while another application could be the identification of contaminants in food and water supplies.

Light wheel - new type of light wave extends the possibilities in nanotechnology

Light can now be used to achieve ever better control of microparticles and nanoparticles. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light are now able to use a laser to cause tiny particles to rotate around an axis perpendicular to the light beam - a particle thus rotates like the wheel of a bicycle in its direction of motion.
