Job Description:

OLEDs, organic light emitting diodes, are increasingly found in display application, as they enable low power consumption, large viewing angle and a wide color gamut. It is generally known that they require strong encapsulation as protection against environmental influences during operation.
New processes are being developed to deposit, process and pattern OLEDs. Some groups work on printed OLEDs, others pattern OLEDs by photolithography and etch. In the development of these processes, some basic do’s and don’ts are known. However, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the mechanisms by which the lifetime of OLEDs is impacted as a result of environmental and chemical influences that OLED undergo during their fabrication.

It is the goal of this postdoctoral research to acquire this understanding and thereby identify killer impurities. The systematic investigation will consist of fabricating reference OLEDs by vacuum evaporation, exposing them to a series of controlled environments of chemicals, and perform analysis to map relationships and bring understanding of the phenomena. Specifically, chemical as well as opto-electronic analysis is foreseen, supported by modelling. Several types of OLEDs will be compared: phosphorescent, fluorescent and TADF.

The postdoctoral student will be working in the framework of a collaboration between the laboratories of imec (Prof. Paul Heremans, and Kyushu University (Prof. Kentaro Harada and Chihaya Adachi, He/she will spend about half time in each of these places.

You have a PhD degree in Physics or Materials Science.
We value your practical experience with the processing and characterization of OLEDs.
We are looking for your strong analytical skills.
You are an agile thinker, self-motivated, and hands-on.
We appreciate your excellent reporting and presentation skills (publications, conferences, seminars).
You can easily integrate in an international team, and are eager to work in Europe and Japan.
Good English communication skills are required. Japanese is a plus.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
