Job Description:

With the continuous downscaling of CMOS technologies, reliability is more and more becoming a major bottleneck from a technology point of view. The main reasons are the increased electric fields and power densities reaching the limits that can be allowed for reliable operation. Moreover, the introduction of novel architectures and materials, to continue performance scaling, which have unknown reliability behavior or introduce new degradation mechanisms. These degradation mechanisms are, however, an inevitable reality of real-world CMOS devices and introduces a significant design challenge. The corresponding reliability issues are mainly mitigated by guard-banding after technology optimization. This leads to excessive design margins and a sub-optical design and technology choice.

In this Postdoc we aim to change the paradigm of design and technology co-optimization (DTCO) to enable large power and performance gains needed for future scaled CMOS technology beyond 7nm. It will involve studying the reliability and variability of advanced devices, such as FinFET and nanowires. Incorporating variability and reliability impact in an early design stage by exploring device and circuit topologies.

Developing a novel methodology to incorporate reliability in the DTCO loop. You will work in a team of digital circuit designers and interact regularly with device engineers and researchers that address variability and reliability aspects Your major responsibility will include:

  • Carving out a systematic methodology to enable reliability and variability aware DTCO;
  • Building and maintaining reliability aware standard cell library;
  • Act as central contact for reliability/variability library characterization across teams;
  • Coordinate with device level experts to incorporate reliability/variability in DTCO as well as coordinate with circuit and system level experts to incorporate reliability/variability in EDA;
  • Participate in state-of-the-art research by submitting papers and attending conferences.

Who you are:

  • You have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or other relevant discipline with research in the domain of system design modeling, design exploration and optimization, and SOC architecture.
  • We are looking for your design background and your design experience in CMOS technology.
  • Expertise in commercial design tools is a very strong plus.
  • We need your experience with design languages such as Verilog, VHDL, Chisel and scripting languages such as Python.
  • Experience with variability/corner sign-off in EDA is a plus.
  • Reliability expertise is a plus. Alternatively, the candidate should have willingness to invest to learn at least the basic principles.
  • We value your out-of-the-box thinking style.
  • We appreciate your ability to work independently and in close collaboration with experts from other technical fields.
  • We need your excellent reporting skills and ability to present technical results and choices clearly and concisely.
  • You can easily integrate in an international team working across time zones and cultures.
  • Given the international character of imec, your fluent knowledge of English is necessary.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
