Job Description:
What you will do The adaptive immune system, with its diversity of cell receptors and antibodies, uses very precise mechanisms for the recognition of pathogens. New immune therapies that modulate the immune system in order to fight cancerous cells are finding their way to the market. Today’s measurement schemes to recognize the potent subpopulations from other cells use fluorescent labels or magnetic beads. However, labels are not desirable if cells need to be injected back into the patient. The purpose of this post-doctoral position is to develop new label-free sensing modalities to detect and select a particular cell type. This is a challenging topic with high clinical relevance and will require an out of the box combination and understanding of physical principles related to imaging, microfluidics, biochemistry and other domains. The candidate for this post doc topic will be able to contribute to this challenge as follows: - Innovative thinking on different biophysical and fluidic principles for label-free interrogation of cells and/or isolation of certain cell populations - Fundamental study of the interaction of cells and microfluidic structures - Fluidics and biophysical modelling - Hands on implementation of the methodology for a biological application of clinical interest - Publishing papers, filing patents, increasing your research network
Who you are - You hold a PhD in (Electrical/ nano) engineering/biophysics or equivalent. - We need your keen knowledge of biophysics and/or fluidics. - We value your deep interest in the interplay of physical principles with biology. - You are familiar with simulation programs such as Comsol or Ansys. - We are looking for your interest in taking up the experimental part of the work. - You are a constructive team player and actively share experience and knowledge with colleagues. - We appreciate your creativity, persistence and passion for what you do. - We value your excellent networking and communication skills in English, as you will work in a multicultural environment. This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
