Semefab Commence Building its CMOS3 Fab Supporting Continued Expansion of MNT and MEMS
(Nanowerk News) Semefab (Scotland) Ltd., a leading, independent wafer fab foundry with an impressive track record of process development, induction and fabrication of MEMS, CMOS and ASIC technologies, today announced that it has started building its CMOS3 wafer fab to support front end processing of MEMS structures.
The CMOS3 fab will be a 1,200 square metre class 100 cleanroom capable of fabricating 0.5 micron structures. The combination of CMOS3 with the already operational MEMS2 fab will allow a full 6” wafer flow for integrating CMOS and MEMS technologies (a 4” flow is already operational).
CMOS3 is scheduled to become operational during June 2010.
Building open a proven successful partnership, Semefab has contracted Merit Merrell Technology to build its CMOS3 world-class cleanroom and to complete the hook-up of all fabrication tools.
Semefab’s CMOS3 fab is at the forefront of the UK’s strategy to establish a world-class fabrication operation to commercialise research & development outcomes from industry and academia. With a combined £6.6 million capital investment from Scottish Enterprise and the Technology Strategy Board, Semefab will create a 0.5mm capable facility.
Semefab’s MNT model accelerates the development process and breaks down barriers to market entry and time to market.
Ian McNaught, MEMS Business Manager for Semefab (Scotland) Ltd said:“The contract to create an operational CMOS3 fab will complete Semefab’s operational commitment to provide an open access MNT development model and a viable route to commercialisation for academia and global industry.
A fully operational facility then accelerates the next phase of our commercial plans.
Semefab awarded the contract to Merit Merrell Technology based upon the company’s performance during the MEMS2 fab rebuild and the constructive partnership evolving between the two companies. Semefab looks forward to CMOS3 being delivered on-budget and on time.”
Ewing Thomson, Project Director, Merit Merrell Technology, said: “Merit was delighted to extend the working relationship with SemeFab following the successful conclusion of the MEMS2 Fab. The CMOS3 project is currently ahead of programme with the structural steel mezzanine being completed 1 week ahead of schedule. The good working relationship developed between Merit and SemeFab personnel during the MEMS2 project, continues into the CMOS3 project and this has the effect of alleviating any potential problems or obstacles at a very early stage resulting in the positive impact to the schedule”.
