Picosun Board Member Receives First GerALD Award

(Nanowerk News) Professor Lauri Niinistö, Member of the Board of Directors of Picosun, was honoured with the first ever GerALD -award at the 2010 Baltic ALD conference, which was held in Hamburg, Germany from September 16 to September 17.
GerALD is an association of scientists performing research on and with atomic layer deposition (ALD). GerALD had its second meeting together with the Baltic ALD conference. The GerALD organization committee decided to introduce an award to honour someone who has significantly contributed to the development of the ALD research in Germany.

"Lauri Niinistö was one of the scientists who were willing to help German newcomers to the field and had much collaboration particularly with German chemists to develop new precursor materials which in his group subsequently have been tested for their performance as ALD precursors. Today groups tutored by him perform their research on their own, having benefited from the collaboration with Niinistö," says Dr. Mato Knez from the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle who, together with his co-chair of the 2010 Baltic ALD conference, Professor Dr. Kornelius Nielsch from the Institute of Applied Physics of the University of Hamburg, presented Professor Niinistö his award.

The GerALD organization committee singled out Lauri Niinistö for his original and significant contribution to the development of the ALD research in Germany. Professor Niinistö himself said in his speech that ten years back, there was no significant ALD research from Germany on the world map. "However, in the recent years, the gap has been closed and Germany resides among the top countries in this field", he pointed out.
"We at Picosun are very proud of Lauri Niinistö, and extremely lucky to have him as our board member. Picosun's board is truly exceptional in its expertise. Dr. Tuomo Suntola, the man who invented ALD, Picosun founder and CTO Sven Lindfors, who is world's most experienced designer of ALD systems, Professor Niinistö, one of the most important and influential ALD scientists on the global scene, and Professor Jorma Routti, former Director General of Research at the European Commission and a leading European technology expert are all part of the board of the company. The weight of expertise of the board supports the phenomenal growth of Picosun", says Managing Director Juhana Kostamo.
