mPhase/AlwaysReady, Inc. Reserve Battery Performs Flawlessly in U.S. Army High Acceleration Field Test

(Nanowerk News) mPhase/AlwaysReady, Inc. today announced that a prototype of its smart reserve nanobattery was successfully deployed in a gun-fired test at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. The test was conducted by the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center (ARDEC) of Picatinny New Jersey. In this test, the AlwaysReady battery delivered power to the test load inside the standard military anti-tank round (M830A1 or HEAT-High Explosive Anti Tank) and demonstrated extreme resiliency, surviving the harsh environment as well as the high acceleration at a g-Force in excess of 45,000 (One "g" is equal to the pull of gravity at sea level).
This gun-fired test was part of a prototype evaluation process that the U.S. Army is conducting as part of its CRADA (Cooperative Research and Development Agreement) with AlwaysReady. Engineers at AlwaysReady collaborated with those at Picatinny involved in the development of precision guidance components to successfully package this reserve electrochemical storage system to operate during the gun-firing and flight environment of a very high "g" round. The developmental qualification work, prior to the live test firing, was performed using Picatinny's air gun test facilities by subjecting battery prototypes to various launch accelerations and various design iterations. This test serves as a validation of the performance of the AlwaysReady battery in this environment. The long-term goal is to potentially incorporate this battery technology into smart, gun-fired munitions programs being developed by Picatinny.
Dr. Fred Allen, AlwaysReady CEO said, "This impressive test result provides another solid data point which speaks to the applicability of this technology for military use. Our battery provided power 'on command' exactly when it was needed. We look forward to bringing more technological advantages to the military as well as commercial applications."
Mr. Carlos M. Pereira, the ARDEC Advanced Precision Concepts Branch Chief and Principal Investigator said, "This battery successfully initiated upon firing and operated flawlessly throughout the test. We are pleased that the AlwaysReady battery performed as intended, especially given the extremely harsh environmental conditions of the test. This will facilitate further development of our guidance systems."
The Smart Nanobattery is an electrochemical system whose design offers a revolutionary approach to energy storage and power management. Its unique architecture enables key features including a shelf life of decades, remote activation, scalable manufacturing, multiple configurations, and programmable power management capabilities.
