Thermo Fisher Scientific Showcases Comprehensive Laboratory Instrumentation for Food Safety
(Nanowerk News) Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. today announced it will showcase its comprehensive laboratory instrumentation and informatics solutions for food, beverage and agricultural applications at the 2008 Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC) annual meeting and exposition. The company will exhibit its food safety portfolio under its premier Thermo Scientific and Fisher Scientific brands at booths 201, 203 and 205 at AOAC 2008 in Dallas from September 21-24, 2008.
“We are pleased to highlight our comprehensive range of solutions to meet the growing demands of our customers – and the global regulatory agencies that oversee them – as they strive to ensure the quality and safety of our food supply chain,” said Marc N. Casper, chief operating officer of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The company’s products are used for testing during all stages of food production, from the farm to the consumer’s table.
Thermo Scientific laboratory instrumentation is robust enough for demanding applications in the field, but also precise enough to detect exceptionally low concentrations of potentially harmful residues in food, beverages, animal feeds and fertilizers. At AOAC, Thermo Fisher will demonstrate how its instruments detect extremely low levels of pesticides, metabolites, pathogens and other compounds within complex samples.
For example, scientists in the booth will test beef and chicken samples using a workflow that includes the Thermo Scientific Exactive™, the revolutionary new bench-top liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system, and the Thermo Scientific Aria™ TLX, which accelerates testing by allowing prepared food samples to be injected directly into the mass spectrometry system. The workflow will also feature the company’s high-quality Remel microbiology products, including dehydrated culture media and Dry Spot testing kits that provide an easy-to-use, rapid means of testing for food pathogens such as E. coli.
In addition, the unique capabilities of the Thermo Scientific Arena 30 discrete photometric analyzer will be highlighted in a workflow designed for beverage testing. This automated, multi-component analyzer can be used during the processing of a range of beverages, including juice, wine and drinking water, for the identification of substances known to produce spoilage and “off” flavors.
Finally, the company will feature a Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum triple quadrupole system in combination with the new Thermo Scientific TriPlus™ Autosampler. These systems, which will be shown as part of a workflow for testing fruit and vegetables, are used widely today to detect a broad range of contaminants in food, animal feeds and fertilizer. The workflow will also showcase Thermo Scientific Nautilus LIMS™ (laboratory informatics management system), which is deployed at leading food and beverage companies and laboratories as a comprehensive data management solution to meet their growing need to track, schedule and report on samples and results from food safety testing.
The three primary workflows in the booth will feature the company’s extensive range of complementary equipment, chemicals, consumables, media, safety and hygiene products, available through its industry-leading Fisher Scientific catalogs.
At AOAC 2008, Thermo Fisher will host a number of poster sessions and deliver a presentation entitled, “The New Era of Food Safety Methods through Advances in Mass Spectrometry.” The presentation, which covers new food safety methods and technologies from the European Community, Japan and the United States, will be held on Tuesday, September 23, at 9:45 a.m. in the Cumberland KL room.
