Hub Overview

Basel combines two things that rarely sit together: a major global pharmaceutical base, with Roche and Novartis headquartered in the city, and a strong fundamental nanoscience program at the University of Basel. The university anchors the Swiss Nanoscience Institute, a center of excellence that runs an unusual interdisciplinary nanoscience degree and a network of labs across northwestern Switzerland. The result is real depth at two ends of the field at once: spin-based quantum computing and nanomagnetism on one side, and nanomedicine, drug delivery, and biointerfaces on the other.
The research clusters at the University of Basel and its partner institutions, with the pharmaceutical industry next door and the Paul Scherrer Institute within reach for large-scale characterization. Basel is one of the leading European centers for spin qubits, the approach that encodes quantum information in the spin of single electrons, while its life science base pulls a parallel strand of work toward medical nanotechnology. The hub also ties into the wider Upper Rhine region around Freiburg and Strasbourg.
