Berlin and Potsdam spread their nanotechnology across a wide set of universities and independent institutes rather than one campus. The three Berlin universities, Freie Universität, Humboldt, and TU Berlin, work alongside Max Planck and Helmholtz centers, including the BESSY II synchrotron in Adlershof, the Fritz Haber Institute in Dahlem with its long tradition in surface science and catalysis, and the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam. The result is unusual depth in materials, thin films, surfaces, and nanoanalytics.
The research sits in several distinct districts. Adlershof in the southeast is a large science and technology park built around the synchrotron, Dahlem in the southwest is home to the historic Max Planck institutes, Charlottenburg holds TU Berlin, Berlin Buch focuses on life science, and Potsdam Golm lies to the west. The region is strongest in nanomaterials, thin films, photonics, nanoanalytics, surfaces, interfaces with biology, and applied quantum technologies.
