Hub Overview

Daejeon is South Korea's research capital, a planned science city built around the Daedeok Innopolis cluster and KAIST. Its nanotechnology centers on the National NanoFab Center, an open-access cleanroom on the KAIST campus that provides semiconductor, MEMS, and nano-bio fabrication to companies, universities, and institutes across the country. Around it sits one of Asia's densest concentrations of government research institutes, covering standards, chemistry, electronics, machinery, and energy, which gives Daejeon unusual breadth from basic science through to commercialization.
Almost everything is concentrated in Daedeok, north of central Daejeon, where KAIST, the national institutes, startup infrastructure, and technology transfer programs sit together in a single planned district. The National NanoFab Center is the practical anchor for outside users, since it runs as a shared national facility rather than a single university lab. Daejeon is strongest in nano-convergence, semiconductors, advanced materials, precision machinery, biotechnology, and the quantum technologies now being built out in new open fabs. Korean institutions often list research groups as individual faculty profiles rather than standalone group pages, with much detail on Korean-language pages, so the labs listed here understate the region's true research volume.
