Hub Overview

Dresden is the core of Silicon Saxony, the largest microelectronics cluster in Europe, and its nanotechnology grows directly out of that chipmaking base. TU Dresden anchors the research side, including the cfaed cluster on advanced electronics, supported by an unusually dense set of independent institutes: several Fraunhofer institutes, the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research, NaMLab, and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. Around them sit working semiconductor fabs run by GlobalFoundries, Infineon, and Bosch, which keeps the region focused on manufacturable nanoelectronics, sensors, and photonics.
Almost everything sits in or near Dresden itself, with the research institutes clustered around TU Dresden and the fabs in the northern part of the city. The defining feature is proximity between academic groups, applied Fraunhofer institutes, equipment suppliers, and volume manufacturers, which makes the region a rare place to take a nanoelectronic idea from a university cleanroom toward production. Strengths run through power and sensor electronics, materials, and microsystems.
