Hub Overview

Edmonton's nanotechnology is built on two facilities that sit side by side at the University of Alberta. The university runs nanoFAB, the largest open-access micro- and nanofabrication and characterization facility in Canada, serving hundreds of academic and industrial users a year. Next to it is the National Research Council's Nanotechnology Research Centre, formerly the National Institute for Nanotechnology, one of North America's quietest buildings, built for measurements so sensitive that vibration and noise had to be engineered out. Together they give the region real depth in materials, devices, and atomic-scale fabrication.
Everything is concentrated on the University of Alberta campus, where the open cleanroom and the national research centre share staff, instruments, and projects through a formal joint initiative. The practical draw for outside groups is nanoFAB, which runs on an open-access policy that lets users control their own processing. Alberta's energy, environmental, and industrial base shapes the applied side of the work, pulling it toward coatings, membranes, sensors, analytical tools, and device-oriented nanotechnology.
