Hub Overview
Enschede, in the east of the Netherlands, is home to the University of Twente and its MESA+ Institute, one of the largest and most prominent nanotechnology research environments in Europe. MESA+ runs a large shared cleanroom and brings together physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, and biomedical work under one roof. The institute is especially known for microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip systems, membranes, and chip and sensor technology, with a strong record of turning research into spinout companies. Enschede sits within the national NanoLabNL network but stands as a distinct Dutch node.
Activity is centered on the University of Twente campus, where the MESA+ cleanroom and shared research infrastructure anchor the cluster and serve both academic and industrial users. Enschede should be treated as its own Dutch nanotechnology center, distinct from the Randstad, even though it connects into the wider Netherlands ecosystem and the open-access NanoLabNL network. Its strengths run through nanofabrication, microfluidics, membranes, photonics, sensors, and the commercialization of device research.
