Hub Overview
Hamburg's nanotechnology is built around light: the city hosts some of the brightest X-ray sources in the world and uses them to see matter at the scale of single atoms. DESY in the Bahrenfeld district operates the PETRA III synchrotron and the FLASH free-electron laser, and the nearby European XFEL is the most powerful X-ray laser of its kind anywhere. The University of Hamburg built its Center for Hybrid Nanostructures on the same campus, combining physics, chemistry, and biology to design nanomaterials and nano-bio devices next door to the instruments that image them.
The center of gravity is the Bahrenfeld science campus in the west of the city, where DESY, the European XFEL, and the university's physics and nanoscience institutes sit together. The region's distinctive strength is measurement: X-ray sources and electron microscopy that resolve structures and ultrafast processes other labs cannot reach, supporting work on surfaces, magnetism at the atomic-scale, and molecular and hybrid nanomaterials. Much of the appeal for outside researchers is beam time on these shared instruments.

Geesthacht
The research of the group is focused on energy and sustainability. The research encompasses design, synthesis, functionalization, and self-assembly of nanoscale materials for applications in plasmonics, photonics, electronics, sensing, separation, and medicine. Using wet chemistry, electrospinning, physical deposition and their combinations, they aim to create nanomaterials and nanocomposites (e.g. metal, metal oxide, polymer, etc.) with diverse multifunctional properties for new technological applications.

Hamburg
Research is on fundamental topics in micro- and nanometer-scale science and technology with a strong emphasis towards new materials and applications. It can be divided into three main fields: The investigation of hybrid (superconductor, ferromagnet, semiconductor) quantum structures by transport and magnetization measurements, optical analysis of correlated materials and biomaterials by Raman spectroscopy and ellipsometry as well as the investigation of quantum Hall droplets.
