Hub Overview
Hong Kong is a compact, university-heavy nanotechnology hub that also serves as a gateway between Chinese manufacturing and international research. Its strength is the cluster of strong universities packed into a small territory, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Polytechnic University, City University, and the University of Hong Kong, supported by the Nano and Advanced Materials Institute, an applied research center, and the Hong Kong Science Park. Together they cover nanomaterials, electronics, energy, healthcare, coatings, and functional materials.
Activity is spread across the territory, from the universities in Kowloon, on Hong Kong Island, at Clear Water Bay, and in Sha Tin, to the Science Park that handles applied research and company growth. The distinctive role is connective: Hong Kong links academic nanoscience and applied materials development to the manufacturing capacity of the Greater Bay Area just across the border. Its strengths lean toward applied and functional materials, electronics, and healthcare rather than large-scale fabrication.
