Hub Overview
This hub follows Indiana's I-65 corridor, the stretch that state planners now call a hard-tech corridor, running from Greater Lafayette down through Boone County to Indianapolis and its suburbs. The research anchor is Purdue University in West Lafayette and its Birck Nanotechnology Center, a large interdisciplinary cleanroom spanning semiconductors, nanoscale devices, photonics, MEMS, and bionanotechnology. That base has pulled in major industry: SK Hynix is building a multibillion-dollar advanced chip packaging and research facility at the Purdue Research Park, the first of its kind in the United States. The corridor extends Purdue's reach all the way to the state capital.
Three nodes define the corridor. Greater Lafayette holds Purdue, its research park, and the incoming semiconductor packaging plant. Midway sits the LEAP Lebanon Innovation and Research District in Boone County, a large advanced manufacturing and life sciences site anchored by a major Eli Lilly investment and modeled on North Carolina's Research Triangle. At the southern end, Indianapolis adds the new Purdue University in Indianapolis campus, the Indiana University School of Medicine, and a deep industry base including Eli Lilly and Rolls-Royce, reaching out into suburbs such as Carmel, Fishers, and Zionsville. The corridor is strongest in semiconductors, advanced packaging, nanomedicine and drug delivery, and aerospace materials.

Nanoscale Science and Engineering embodies fundamental research and technology development of materials, structures, devices, processes, and systems where at least one physical dimension is on the length scale of approximately 1-100 nanometers. This is a current area of strength and a future area of growth at Purdue. In the department of Chemical Engineering there are 11 faculty involved with federally funded research programs in the area.
