Hub Overview

Ithaca is a single university town with an outsized place in nanotechnology, thanks to Cornell. The Cornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility, often just called the CNF, is one of the oldest and most established open-user nanofabrication facilities in the United States, taking outside researchers from academia and industry for decades. Cornell pairs it with deep programs in materials, applied physics, and electrical engineering, giving the town real strength in nanoscale devices, photonics, MEMS, and the fabrication methods that underpin them.
Almost all activity sits on Cornell's Ithaca campus, centered on Duffield Hall and the surrounding engineering and physical-science buildings, where the cleanroom and characterization tools are concentrated. The draw for outside groups is the CNF itself, since it runs as a shared national facility rather than a single lab and trains visiting users on its tools. Ithaca sits within the broader upstate New York technology corridor, but its nanotechnology weight comes almost entirely from the university.
