Hub Overview
Jena is Germany's optics capital, and its nanotechnology follows from that history. Carl Zeiss and the glassmaker Schott were founded here in the nineteenth century, and the city still combines a strong optics industry, including Zeiss and Jenoptik, with Friedrich Schiller University and a cluster of photonics institutes. The work concentrates on nanooptics, nanophotonics, and precision measurement: shaping light at the nanoscale, building optical fibers and sensors, and pushing the limits of microscopy and fabrication for light-based technologies.
Jena is compact, and its nanotechnology profile is unusually focused. Research and companies cluster around the university, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, Zeiss, Jenoptik, and a base of specialist suppliers. It is best understood not as a broad nanotechnology hub but as a deep nanooptics and photonics center, where the science, the instruments industry, and the supply chain sit within a short distance of each other.
