Hub Overview
Karlsruhe's nanotechnology runs almost entirely through the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, an unusual merger of a university and a national research center. KIT operates the Karlsruhe Nano Micro Facility, an open-user facility that since 2008 has offered its fabrication and characterization tools to researchers worldwide, free of charge when the results are published. Around it sit the Institute of Nanotechnology and the Institute of Microstructure Technology, giving the region particular strength in nanomaterials, energy materials, printed electronics, and microsystems.
The activity is concentrated rather than spread out, anchored by KIT's campuses in and around the city, including the large Helmholtz site to the north that houses the open-access facility. The defining feature is access: outside academic and industrial users can apply through a simple proposal system and use instruments that would be costly to build themselves. KIT also ties into the wider advanced manufacturing and mobility base of Baden-Württemberg, including automotive and energy industry links.
