Hub Overview

Greater Los Angeles spreads its nanotechnology across several strong but separate campuses rather than one dominant center. Caltech in Pasadena runs the Kavli Nanoscience Institute, with particular strength in nanophotonics, quantum devices, and single-molecule biophysics. UCLA in Westwood anchors the California NanoSystems Institute, a large interdisciplinary center spanning nanomedicine, energy, and materials. USC, UC Riverside, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory extend the region into device engineering, environmental nanomaterials, and space instrumentation.
Research clusters around three nodes that are a fair drive apart: Pasadena for Caltech and JPL, Westwood for UCLA, and Riverside for UC Riverside. Commercial activity is scattered more widely, through Irvine, Torrance, Camarillo, and the broader Southern California corridor. Because the campuses are spread across a large metropolitan area, a visit usually means choosing a node rather than covering the whole region in one trip.

Vaults are components of cells that were first described in 1986. Because the particle is abundant in all cells of higher organisms and highly conserved throughout evolution, it is likely that the function of the vault is important to life. This website is designed for the educated non-scientist. It summarizes the present state of knowlege of this fascinating particle.
