Hub Overview

Melbourne is one of Australia's two main nanotechnology centers, and its defining asset is the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication in Clayton, one of the largest cleanrooms in the southern hemisphere and the Victorian node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility. The center gives academic and industry users open-access to a single large fabrication facility shared across the city's universities. Around it, the University of Melbourne, Monash, RMIT, Swinburne, and the national science agency CSIRO cover nanomaterials, biomedical nanotechnology, sensors, and energy materials.
The research clusters in two areas: Parkville, near the University of Melbourne and the city's biomedical precinct, and Clayton to the southeast, where Monash and the nanofabrication center sit together. The Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication is the practical draw, since it is a shared open facility rather than a single group's lab. Sydney is Australia's other major nanotechnology hub and is best treated as a separate listing, with Melbourne stronger on shared fabrication and biomedical materials.
