Montreal's nanotechnology is built on a tight group of fabrication facilities shared across the city's universities. McGill University runs the open-access McGill Nanotools Microfab, while Polytechnique Montréal operates its Laboratoire de Microfabrication and INRS adds the Laboratoire de Micro et Nanofabrication at its Varennes site. Together they give the region serious cleanroom capacity in microsystems, sensors, microfluidics, and photonics, with Université de Montréal and the wider Quebec materials community filling out the research base.
The hub clusters around McGill and Polytechnique near downtown, with INRS at Varennes just east of the island and strong links to Sherbrooke's nanofabrication center about ninety minutes away. Photonics and optoelectronic materials are a particular regional strength, alongside biomedical devices and energy materials. For a visitor, Montreal is most useful when a project needs fabrication across more than one facility, since the labs deliberately coordinate access.
