Hub Overview

The Greater New York nanotechnology scene runs from Manhattan out to Long Island and across into New Jersey. In the city, Columbia University, NYU, the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, and Cornell Tech cover nanoscale materials, photonics, and bioelectronics. On Long Island, Brookhaven National Laboratory operates the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, a U.S. Department of Energy user facility open to outside researchers, alongside Stony Brook University. Princeton and Rutgers extend the cluster south into New Jersey with strengths in quantum, electronics, and materials.
For visitors, the practical research nodes are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, and the New Jersey corridor, each reachable from the city without much trouble. Brookhaven is the standout shared facility, since its nanomaterials center accepts external proposals rather than serving a single institution. Albany, often grouped with New York, is a separate upstate semiconductor center and is better treated as a related New York State asset than as part of this hub.
