Nottingham is a focused UK nanoscience node centered on the University of Nottingham and its Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre, an open facility for materials imaging and analysis from the micron scale down to single atoms. The university has particular strength in single-molecule nanoscience and scanning probe microscopy, alongside carbon nanostructures, bionanotechnology, and nanopharmaceuticals, the last drawing on Nottingham's deep tradition in pharmaceutical science. It complements rather than competes with the larger London, Oxford, and Cambridge cluster by adding a Midlands characterization and nanomedicine node.
The centre sits on the University of Nottingham campus and is built around an unusually deep electron microscopy and surface analysis suite, with a small nanofabrication cleanroom attached. It is open to academic and industrial users for imaging, chemical analysis, and characterization across engineering, physical-sciences, and life sciences. Nottingham's distinct contribution is the combination of high-resolution characterization with strengths in single-molecule science and the nanoscale side of drug delivery and pharmaceuticals.
